This adapter works properly if one understands the nuances in the various ways that various iPod models connect. For car systems with usb audio capabilities, one does not need this. If you have older analog inputs, that is where this unit is needed. This is an analog line level out and usb charge cable combined. However, with USB charging, the iPod does have to support the usb charging input, not all USB charge sources work with all iPods. In any case, the line level output works fine even if the iPod does not charge simultaneously. (In which case, it is the charge source at fault, not this cable) The sound quality of your iPod is slightly better if your system has an analog input as the iPod’s own DAC sounds better than most car USB audio inputs. But then you have to control the audio like any other source that way, and if you are in a car, choose your playlist before you drive or have your passenger control you iPod!

Wont work with my car audio system
I purchased this to use in my car (Mini). My old iPhone 4 has been relegated to be nothing but a music player now. This cable looked like the same thing that came with my car a long time ago (30 pin to usb + audio).However, when I plugged it in the car system said "Cable not supported."I don't know why its such a problem to find a cable that will work with my car audio system, but it is. Car audio is factory system.

Didn't work for what I intended to use it for.
Didn't work for what I intended to use it for. I was hoping to output the audio of my iPod Classic through the 3.5mm audio cable but it's only good for charging iPod shuffle's. It doesn't even charge my iPod Classic.

It works great!
This cable is perfect for my iOS iPod and sound quality is great! No problems whatsoever hooks directly into my sound bar.
