Not Quality
Probably not ideal for hermit crabs. I use it to put my hamsters in while I'm cleaning their cages. Handle broke without anything even in it yet. Not quality, but works for what I need it for. The opening is also much smaller than other hermit crab habitats I've owned.

Crabs love climbing the cage, looks nice too.
My three crabs absolutely loved the cage the minute I put them in it. They spent 95% of their time sleeping while hanging on to the wire mesh and it was a lot more fun looking at them up so close than through a glass or plastic terrarium. It is quite easy to clean and the bottom is a single piece of plastic so absolutely no water will leak out of it. The open mesh makes it a cinch to spray my hermit crabs with water several times a day - something they really like.Very happy with this purchase.

... medium sized cages in the past and were very satisfied. decided to get a large this year
we ordered two medium sized cages in the past and were very satisfied. decided to get a large this year. it is not as pictured. the lid is a one piece plastic and the slide opening is very small. we enjoy spending time walking around the lake and seeing how many turtles we can hand catch and then return to the water before leaving. we will only be able to put very small turtles in here.

It does not flip open like in the picture
It does not flip open like in the picture. The lid actually pivots and is slightly rough and noisy. Other than that it is good quality for the price. It was larger than I had expected but it turned out to be a very good thing.

Hermit crab death trap
I feel sorry for the people who believe their hermit crabs love this cage, and worse for the crabs themselves. Several people saw their hermit crabs become active in this cage, climbing on the sides, and thought that meant they were enjoying it. THEY ARE TRYING TO GET OUT BEFORE THEY SUFFOCATE.Hermit crabs breathe using modified gills, similar to a fish. THEY NEED VERY HIGH HUMIDITY TO SURVIVE. With lower than 80% humidity level, their gills dry out. They cannot breathe, and die a slow and painful death. THERE IS NO WAY A HERMIT CRAB COULD SURVIVE IN THIS CAGE FOR VERY LONG.Besides that, they need at least 6" of substrate to bury themselves in when they molt. This cage will not hold any substrate, it would fall through the mesh.IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE, with a LIVE hermit crab inside, go wrap it in plastic wrap to keep in moisture, and then spray the inside with dechlorinated water to bring the humidity up right away. Then run to the pet store and spend the $10 on a glass aquarium. It's worth it. If you honestly can't afford one, go on Craig's List. Even a plastic Kritter Keeper (also with some plastic wrap on some of the vents in the lid) is better than this, but definitely a (very) short-term solution. Use it for a few months, tops, while you save up for a real tank.TIPS for people with hermit crabs but no idea what to do with them (because you were most likely misinformed by a pet store employee):- Hermit crabs are social. Never keep just one. Have at least 3. In the wild, where they were taken from, they live in colonies of hundreds of crabs. Compared to that, 3 is a really small colony. (Hermit crabs have never been successfully bred in captivity, so they are ALL taken from the wild.)- Use a glass aquarium with a mixture of coconut substrate (i.e. Zoo Med Eco Earth or Exo Terra Plantation Soil) and reptile sand (NOT the kind with calcium... check the label!) at least 6" deep. Make sure the substrate is moist but not wet. There shouldn't be water collecting on the bottom of the tank.- They need BOTH dechlorinated FRESH WATER AND dechlorinated SALT WATER. It's easy to make, just DO NOT use table salt lol. At a pet store they have salt mix for saltwater aquariums (i.e. Instant Ocean), and the instructions for mixing it are very straightforward. You should be able to mix small batches and keep it in a jug to refill the bowl in your crab's aquarium. Make sure the salt water dish is deep enough for the crabs to soak in.- NEVER, EVER GIVE YOUR CRAB A PAINTED SHELL. If he is already in one, get him a new shell ASAP! A natural one, not painted, no matter how "non-toxic" it says the paint is. Give him a variety of choices in size and shape. You can buy a pack of different ones and just put all of them in the tank, he will switch to one he likes. If you want a recommendation, one that is most frequently chosen is a turbo shell (not a gold-mouth turbo though. They are heavier, maybe?), a green turbo should work well and you can find them in all sizes, relatively cheap. Just google it if you can't find one on Amazon. These are NOT tips to make your crab's life super happy, they are just for your crab's SURVIVAL. They need a bit more to have what I would consider a full life, but this is a start.Hermit crabs can live MORE THAN 30 YEARS in captivity. They are (surprisingly) intelligent, and, believe it or not, seem to experience a full range of emotions. Please treat them accordingly.

Love it
I was almost talked into buying a cage like this one at the mall for double the price. So glad I checked Amazon. My kids love this cage for their hermit crabs!

crabitat
The crabitat was just as described. Our crabs can climb up the sides, and it has more room than the one it replaced. Shipping was quick, would deal with seller again.
