Excellent book and a fantastic companion piece
This book is a great companion piece for TOPGUN: The Legacy: The Complete History of TOPGUN and Its Impact on Tactical Aviation by the same author. If you are looking for an in depth history of the real Topgun, that book is the one to go for. If you want a concise general overview with tons of photos, this book is for you. Together, you have a fantastic couple of reference books that complement each other very well. I recommend this book for anyone with an interest in naval fighter aviation from Vietnam to the present.

A well-written, complete, and photo-rich tribute to the Navy TOPGUN school.
Experienced aviation author Brad Elward tells the whole story of the Navy Fighter Weapons School, popularly known as Topgun, in this beautiful volume. The text is economical: complete and concise. The first chapter is a short history of air combat from World War I to the 1950s. He then explains the Navy’s establishment of Topgun and traces its progress through the years to today. He even discusses integration of the F-35C into the program. Every portion of the story is generously illustrated with well-chosen photographs and informative captions.Elward has done an excellent job covering 50 years of history in 144 pages.(Note: I was a Topgun instructor from 1984-87 and would not endorse this book if I didn’t think it was good; it is.)
