Comprehensive and Authoritative
This hard cover book has mostly black and white photographs with plenty of text to read. There are a few color photos, though they're sparse. The ten chapters in the book cover the world of model ships and boats to Power Boat models. The book ranges from early sailing vessels to modern commercial boats; there are three "sub chapters" written in to Chapter 7 titled "Away from the Main Stream." The sub-chapters are titled "Models of State and Ceremonial Vessels," "Models of Lake and River Craft," followed by "Models of Ship and Boat Model-making." In the latter part of the book there's a chapter titled "Some Techniques used in Ship and Boat Model-making," I'm assuming that several of the model photos are built from scratch rather than ships from model kits.

Won't help a shipmodeler much
This is a comprehensive history of model ships, but of little use to the model builder looking for building techniques. It does not help a builder with hull construction, decks and deck furniture, tackle or rigging. But it is a good "read" for marine history buffs.
