Want a Rollicking Reality Respite?
Captivating from the very first is this wowzer of an 1859 bestseller is 'The Hidden Hand or Capitola the Madcap.' The subtitle refers to this adventure story's bright, bold & fearless heroine, conjured into existence by prolific storyteller E.D.E.N (Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte) Southworth. Beginning with "Old Hurricane" Warfield's quest for a lost child in the rowdy streets of NYC & back home again - with young cross-dressing 'Cap' in tow - to the wilds of Virginia, the tale's chockablock with evil bandits, preyed-upon heiresses, true loves, jail-breaks, thunder, & danger. Beware the harsh pre-Civil War terminologies as to the enslaved characters, but don't let this keep you from this crackerjack of an adventure.

Surprisingly Good
I read this book for an English class. Even though it was required reading, I still found the novel to be pretty attention grabbing and it kept me interested.

which is great, but then what are you doing on Amazon
I guess I should technically "some violence" as in Erroll Flynn-level derring do but honestly if the 1800s newspaper published adventure-violence bothers you I don't know how you walk around today's world (unless you are of particular modernity-eschewing faiths, which is great, but then what are you doing on Amazon?)CAPITOLA IS STILL ONE OF THE GREATEST HEROINES EVER.

Fantastic
My daughter had to read this book in her women's studies class and she said that Capitola reminded her of me and I had to read this. I loved every single page of this book. I bought several copies for some young impressionable girls I knew so that hopefully it would inspire them to be brave and courageous and to live life fully!

Hidden Hand
The book is really good. I don't usually like to read, but I love this book. I am reading it for a literature course and so I have to read it how it was written in serialization, yet every time I come to the end of an installment, I have trouble putting the book down. I love it!

Wonderful
The Hidden Hand was a very exciting book to read. The protagonist was, of course, atypical for the times but she was wonderful in the way that she conformed in some matters, was radically different and imaginary in other ways yet at all times loving and funny.
