Slated: Book One in the Slated Trilogy

PERFECTION
Perfection. I don't read plenty of book because most of today's YA books are unoriginal, shallow, repeat that whole "popular-girl-hates-me" theme and school drama, unbelievable, flat, and boring. But trust me that none of these appear here- only characters with depth, brilliant writing, unexpected twists, and a genius, reliable dystopia world. It's a fast read and really hard to put down. Do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW.

Incredible story, but lacking a big bang ending
Slated has one of the coolest stories to it. Ever. It takes place in futuristic England where young teenage criminals are given a second chance. Rather than being put to death or imprisoned for life, they can be "rehabilitated" by being Slated. Their memories and personalities are erased and they are given a clean slate. They start over from scratch, relearn the basics, and most importantly, they are equipped with a "Levo" device. This device monitors their emotions and their happiness levels. If they get too sad or too angry, their Levo device knocks them out and can even kill them. This is to prevent the criminals from reverting back to their old, violent ways.So this story is basically about Kyla being Slated and given a new adopted home. She goes to school and tries to fit in. But along the way she starts remembering things, presumably from her old life, even though that shouldn't be possible. She begins to question everything around her and doesn't know who to trust.I just thought the ideas in this book were great. I loved the idea of teenage criminals who were supposedly so bad that they had to be wiped clean. I loved the conspiracy surrounding this, and the awesome technology it involved.I also thought Kyla was a great character. Despite having her memory erased, Kyla is constantly thinking for herself. She learns very quickly, is incredibly perceptive, and doesn't blindly accept everything as fact. This made her a very likable character because I felt like I could quite easily be her. As a reader, I'm sitting there desperately trying to find answers. I wanted to know what was going on. What's the truth behind the Slateds? Where are these people disappearing to? Why was she Slated in the first place? And Kyla was right there with me asking all those questions. Although I loved that about her, that is kind of where my first issue with the book arises..Kyla asks all the right questions -- all the questions that I wanted answers to. But after 448 pages, I felt like almost none of those questions were actually answered. There was so much information I was desperately starving for, but by the time I got to the end of the book, it still wasn't there. It was honestly pretty frustrating because the book was a little slow at times but I kept telling myself, "Surely the ending will be epic!" ..but it wasn't really. We do get bits and pieces of information, but it wasn't the "z0mg all revealing" ending I was hoping for. On the bright side, I am inclined to think that this means the second book will be epic. There are so many unanswered questions and I'm desperately hoping that all will be revealed in book #2. If they are, then I'm sure book #2 will be incredible! As for some other characters, I loved some and didn't like some. Most of them, I loved. I adored Kyla's mum and dad because my first impressions were totally off. At the beginning, Kyla's dad is portrayed as the nice guy who's on her side, and her mum is portrayed as the evil, overbearing, dragon mother. But as the story progresses, they almost completely switch roles. We become very suspicious of Kyla's dad because there are just so many questions.. and once again, there's mystery surrounding her mum, but it seems like she might be more on Kyla's side than we originally thought! Many of the other characters were very similar to Kyla's mum and dad in the sense that I was constantly doubting their intentions. I literally had no idea who I could trust, who was a government pawn, and who actually sympathized with Kyla and saw her as a person rather than a criminal to experiment on.The one character I really didn't like was Ben. I just felt like I didn't "get" him, and that's a shame because he's a really key character and a love interest develops between him and Kyla. He's Slated, just like she is. At the beginning I got the sense that he was kind of a clueless guy. Most of the Slateds are very unlike Kyla. Unlike her, they accept everything without question and they're often just smiley, bubbly, and thoughtless. That's what Ben seemed like. I just felt like he didn't really fit well with Kyla. She's one who questions everything, who's dying for answers, who wants the truth. But Ben is just happy in his little mind-wiped bubble. I didn't feel the spark or the chemistry between them. But issues aside, Slated was a really intriguing story. Teri Terry has created a fascinating world, and man, she knows all the right buttons to push to have me clawing for answers. I'm literally dying to see the conspiracies unravel and the truths to fall into place. That's why I'm desperately hoping that the second book, Fractured, will put all the pieces into place and have that BIG BANG that I'm hoping for.

Best Book I've Read in a LONG Time!
Wow! This book was incredible. No shameless gushing here. The writing is brilliant. The story is wonderfully controversial. Absolutely giving this a strong 5 stars.Kyla's perspective is spot on to what you would expect with someone who has been slated. This is a wonderful take on a post apocalyptic world and touches too close to reality for comfort. It is heart wrenching, sad, delightful, with just enough moments of glory to keep you from going over the edge. Two thumbs way up!

Great book!
I was captivated from the first chapter! I haven’t been able to put it down! The characters are very strong and I feel like I know them personally. The plot flows along nicely with a perfect balance of ups and downs.

Love it!
I loved this book, and I cannot wait for the next to come put this fall. The only thing that did disappoint me was how the whole book was pretty much just an introduction to what is going on in there society and Kyla's new life. It didn't start getting good until the end when she got her memory back and when she became resistant to the Levo. The next book, I hope, will start to get more into some action. Other than that I loved the book! When Teri Terry is done with this series I hope she will start another one similar to this, just with a different plot and character. I would give more than five stars if I could. I recommend this to people who liked the book Divergent. Read this book now!

Unique and Exciting Story
Slated is Teri Terry's debut novel and after reading this book I'm excited to see what else she can do. The book is fast paced and kept me interested throughout the entire novel. The world-building was very well done and the cast of characters were diverse and interesting.Terry did a really good job taking Kyla, a character who was supposed to know nothing about the outside world and making her both vulnerable and tough at the same time. I was also impressed with how the details of the story unfolded fast enough to keep me interested, but slow enough to keep me guessing. Slated had a multi-layered plot that featured several different sub-plots so that there was always something that had my mind reeling. The various characters and their individual motives are what really make this book a mind-bender. Between Kylas mom, dad, doctor, teachers, group leader, and semi-boyfriend, you never know who is on Kyla's side and who is working for their own benefit. Watching Kyla try to figure out who to trust was actually stressful because I had no idea who had good intentions and who was out to just use her. It's hard to say too much without giving away the nuances of the plot but what I can say is that if you're looking for a fast-paced thriller, Slated could be the book for you.Star Count: 4 stars. I read this in two seatings and immediately picked up the sequel. If Fractured is half as intriguing as Slated was then I will be a true Terri Terry fan from here on out.

Entertaining read
I recommend this as a good and gripping 'fast-food' trilogy. It isn't high literature - of which I am no big fan anyway - but fun to read, well-planned, with a nicely developed background and interesting characters. If you plan on getting into the series be advised that these aren't stand-alone novels. The 3 books together make up the story. Part one gets the story going but doesn't resolve it. That's what the other two parts are about. All questions will find their answers in the end - but not in book 1.The nice thing about it is that since books 2 and 3 are integral parts of the story here they don't feel like somewhat artificial add-ons like is the case with similar projects sometimes. The Maze Runner or the Testing trilogies come to mind.As to the heroine - she is developing too over the course of the books. She starts out as kind of a blank - as the title rightly indicates. This isn't a coincidence. And I found her intriguing from the start. The more she fills in the blanks as the story progresses the more interesting she gets.Very fitting with the base theme of the trilogy in my opinion. She also is very intelligent. I like that.

Fantastic dystopian, sci-fi concept
After a heart-pounding, poetic prologue we are introduced to Kyla, a slight, wispy blond-haired sixteen-year-old who has been 'Slated!'Given a second chance, her slate wiped clean by the Central Coalition, Kyla - a perceived criminal of the state - is reborn into her sixteen year old body with no memories. Processed and released from the nightmarish New London Hospital out of the care of the sinister, Dr Lysander and into the arms of her new family - Mum, Dad and sister, Amy - she is given a final chance to exist in this world.Kyla is constantly monitored and her emotions recorded on a 1-10 scale by a Levo on her wrist - where 10 is utter joy, 5-6 is normal but less than 3 means a ticket to la-la land, seizures and a zapped brain. As she settles into her new existence, Kyla has a burning desire to fill her blank mind. She must learn simple tasks again and as she does she discover natural skills and abilities from her past; a passion for owls and art, driving, running and of course boys! Now they can really mess up your levels!Haunted by cruel flashbacks, Kyla breaks down the walls inside her mind as she searches for her true self. As she deals with Slater Haters, terrorists and sinister organisations, Kyla knows that every move she makes could be her last. This is a fantastic dystopian, sci-fi concept which is superbly paced and written very much 'in the moment.' Even throughout passages of wonderful stillness, you feel that Kyla is always running. There's a great set up for the sequel, Fractured, which is already on my radar! Great stuff!

A GOOD THRILLER! (No spoilers)
The book's about Kyla, a 16yr old, who's been slated i.e. past memories all got wiped and then moved in to a new family. Then, some people go missing and slowly her memories starts to come in bits with unusual dreams. The book's storyline captivated me to read the book and true to it, the book was worth reading! The one thing I really didn't like were the sentences, short and clipped. That's why -1 star. Apart from that, the thriller part is decent and the suspense build up was also good. An interesting concept and I would like to continue the series. If you want to try something different rather than the same old YA books, Slated can be added to your book list.
